Take a step back in the past and take a look at the history of one of these classic toys.
In 1943, a naval engineer mistakenly knocked some springs out of the shelf and was working on a meter designed to monitor the horsepower of battleships. He marveled at the way they "walk" instead of falling, the strange movements of these springs gave Richard James an idea and an instant toy was born. That toy: Slinky.
Richard James tested the best steel gauge and coil for the next two years and refined to take advantage of his new toy. His wife, Betty properly found the full name of this new toy - Slyky. This is a traespiral or a sleek meaning Swedish word.
A couple borrowed 500 dollars, James coiled 80 feet of wire into a 2 inch spiral and designed a machine to manufacture their new toys. Initially sales were late, but after Slynky was demonstrated at Philadelphia's Tsui department store in the 1945 Christmas season, it soared. The first 400 was sold with a 90 minute demonstration, a new epidemic began.
About 1960, Richard James suffered from what is called Mid Life Crisis and left his wife, joining their six children and the religious cult of Bolivia. He also , He abandoned Sluinky toys he worked hard to produce and left the company in debt and ruin. Betty James took over as CEO of James Industries and introduced other toys, including "Slinky Lineup": Slyky Pet, Crazy Eye Slecky (Sleky Fake Eyeball and Glasses), Neon Slinky, and the original Black American steel replaced Blue Sweden's steel. In addition she moved its headquarters from Philadelphia to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania and started a full aggressive advertising campaign with the now famous Slingkjing jingle:
"What will be the Slinkity sound by walking the stairs, alone in pairs?
Spring, spring, wonderful thing, everyone knows that it is a slinky ...
It's Slyky, it's a slinky, for fun, it's a wonderful toy
It's Slyky, it's a slinky, it's fun for girls and boys. "
But Slinky is not just an interesting toy for children. It is used to show the characteristics of waves, forces, energy states at school of physics class. Slinkik is still on sale (250 million are sold so far), manufactured by Hollysburg, Pennsylvania using the original equipment designed by Richard James.
