Restormel Castle
Restormal Castle occupies the hills above the Fourwee River, north of Lostwithiel. The plan is very curious. An entirely circular Bailey with a set of interior buildings arranged centrally against the curtain. All domestic buildings are ruined, but the curtains are virtually undamaged. The sense of compactness is enhanced by the absence of the outer bailey.
There is no historical reference to the castle so far, 1264, when Simon Monfort seized it, but Restormel is obviously older than that. It looks like it will crown a motto from the outside of the four-sided lyric curtain, and structure Although often listed as a large shell keep, the "motto" ring is really even ringing up towards the outside now because the inner bank was removed when the curtain was built It looks like
In 1270 the castle was handed over to Corns earls and enjoyed its easy dominance.伯爵 Edmund chose Lostwithiel as his administrative center and Restormel became his home. It is in this era that we bear an interesting apartment resulting in a curtained, puzzled group of curved rooms. Kitchens, halls, suns, ante chapels, two large guest rooms as 1337identifys inventory of these apartments. Apart from the kitchen, the main apartment stood on the ground floor level above all the cellars.
The chapel reached from the ante chapel occupied a modern square tower boldly projecting from the curtain line. The Edwardian square mural tower is typical of Cornwall. With the death of Edmund in 1299, the Marquis returned to Crownm, and the castle rarely visited with the founding of the Duchy. The only military episode was the siege of 1644.
Rabi Castle
Raby Castle stands in a large park to the north of Staindrop. Despite the inevitable changes in the stately castle, Raby is one of the best of the later medieval fortified mansions. It reflects the desires of the Nevilles who became the most powerful of the bishops of Durham's subjects. Ralph, Lord Neville, commanded the British at Nevil's Cross Battle and probably started building here. His son John obtained a license to crenellate in 1378, but the castle was probably almost complete by then.
Irregular layout suggests fragmentary development around the core of the old house. To the east of the courtyard is a range of holes, with a small tower of the original Pele. It was built in a pentagonal enclosure surrounded by a range of houses. Large-scale, rectangular adjacent tower project regularly. Clifford's Tower is located at the top of the northwest and is the largest of them. Next comes the kitchen tower on the northeast corner.
The eastern front was unique because the tower was projected deep from behind the hall. Thus, there was a deep recess between Mount Raskelf, the Kitchen Tower Aid, and the Chapel Tower in the middle of the Eastern Front. However, the eighteenth century block fills the recess. The same thing happens in the void between the Chapel Tower and the Tower of Blumer. The latter was probably a tower house, as it once stood strangely isolated from the rest of the castle.
Two campaigns in particular influenced the appearance of the castle. In 1782, John Carr drove the driveway through the church tower and raised the lower one at the expense of the upper one and the chapel. The second was the reconstruction of the southern area and the extension of the great hall of the 1840s.
