Dog Owner Failure

Just because you are dealing with a disability you can not mean that you can not have a dog in your life. Research shows that it will benefit you and your dog. There are a few things you can do to make your experience easier.

If you need help giving your dog medications, fluids, or shots, ask your veterinarian if you know who will make a home visit. If not, contact your local pet sitters to find something to help. Many pet sitters are trained to perform these functions for sick pets.

Use a flashlight or laser pointer to play with your dog. Dogs love to follow the light and you don't have to move. Instead, he has a remote control car to chase. He gets exercise and you don't get tired on.

If you have difficulty performing basic functions for yourself, check out the service or use of a support dog. Disability Assist Dog-A daily function that makes physical restrictions with socially helpful people except guide dogs. As with guide and hearing dogs, assisted dogs are accepted in public places.

Divide a large bag of food into small containers and help lift and pack the dishes. I'm filling in less time and energy where I want to spend a big meal. Must be on the upper floor of the bowl to stand on the dog food.

Walking the dog is difficult when you are disabled. Consider hiring a nearby teen to do this or have a pet sitter come in, and walk your dog daily. Another alternative is to consider a fenced yard.

It does not mean that you can not enjoy the companionship of a dog with a disability. It's just a little tweaking to make both of you happy.
